Acupuncture for Fertility

A cute baby smiling on a bed - her parents used acupuncture for fertility and were able to have her

Acupuncture and herbs have been used for thousands of years to safely and effectively enhance fertility and treat a wide variety of underlying fertility issues. You may have noticed while looking for a fertility clinic in Portland, Oregon, that your access to alternative health care is full of choices, including acupuncture treatment.

Specializing in the treatment of fertility means that I recognize the physical, mental, and emotional struggles that come with this journey, and I have developed many techniques over the years to help treat those of you in need with fertility acupuncture.

Supporting Your Fertility Journey at Every Stage

Fertility Preparation

For those of you who live in the Portland, Oregon, area and are planning to start trying to conceive within the next six months to one year, together, we will lay out a plan for you that includes acupuncture, herbs, nutrition advice, relaxation, and self-care. You will learn how to read key fertility signs, and we will wade through any misconceptions you may have about women’s health.

You’ll get a foundation for the custom emotional support I provide my clients. During the preparation process, we’ll also assess your current lifestyle and discuss how stress, relaxation, and natural care can affect the body and fertility when attempting a pregnancy.

Natural Fertility Enchancement/Treatment

For patients who have already been trying to conceive and either know- or are worried- that they have fertility issues, a custom treatment plan will be made for you that includes acupuncture, herbs, supplements, and nutrition support based on my years of training, practice, and the latest in natural and Western medical research.

Your treatment plan will vary depending on whether you are seeking all-natural remedies or a treatment session and if we will be working in conjunction with your doctor, Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), and your IVF stimulation process. We will reassess often and make changes to your treatment plan based on changing symptoms and/or changing levels of medical intervention.

Onsite pre- and post-IVF transfer treatment

I have worked closely with ORM, OHSU, and other Portland-area private Reproductive Endocrinologists. I can offer pre-IUI treatment as well as onsite pre- and post-IVF or embryo transfer treatment. It’s become acceptable for acupuncture fertility specialists to work with assisted reproductive therapy in this manner, and a tenet of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) involves playing a supportive role alongside traditional Western medical treatments.

Your acupuncture session will focus on your physical and mental relaxation to promote blood flow. Additionally, Chinese herbal medicine can work alongside your existing treatments with your doctor’s approval. Fertility acupuncture and other Chinese medicine can be quite complementary to other therapies.

Miscarriage Recovery and Subsequent Pregnancy Prep

Helping women recover from miscarriages is dear to my heart. If you have gone through a loss, you deserve support, guidance, and understanding, whether you are in acute phases of recovery or in the stages of trying to conceive again.

Your level of need will guide our individualized treatment roadmap. We will discuss your mental, physical, and emotional status, and I will make recommendations to assist in your recovery, including any blood tests that may be helpful for you to request from your OB-GYN. My clinical experience and the sensitivity of our licensed acupuncturists will help support you in this difficult time.

I have a host of resources that I employ, depending on your needs and where you are in your grieving process. You will have a safe space in which to discuss your loss and to ask any questions about the implications of conceiving again.

Your treatment plan will include nutrition therapy, self-care, an acupuncture session, and possibly herbal medicine. I rely on my network of referrals when appropriate and will help you heal physically and emotionally.

If you are pregnant or looking to attempt to conceive after a miscarriage, we will make a plan to get you prepared physically and emotionally. My support will continue after conception, and at that time, we will adjust your treatment plan accordingly to have a healthy pregnancy.

  • Immunologic Infertility
  • Recurrent Miscarriage
  • Anovulation
  • Poor Egg Quality
  • Enhanced Maternal Age

Additionally, fertility acupuncture and Chinese medicine can help in the first trimester, during the remainder of the pregnancy, and for postpartum care. Finding an acupuncturist who can aid you in listening to your body is critical to your success with fertility acupuncture.

Finding the Right Acupuncture Fertility Specialist

Finding an acupuncture fertility specialist requires some research. Look for someone with extensive training and experience in reproductive medicine and infertility. They should have a minimum of a Master’s degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (or Oriental Reproductive Medicine) and be licensed or certified in your state. They may also be listed with the National Certification Commission and the American Board of Medical Acupuncture.

It is ideal if they are members of organizations such as the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine or the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Check reviews from other patients and ask your fertility doctor for a referral. Your acupuncturist should work closely with your fertility drugs and your medical team to provide you with the best chance of success.

Lastly, you’ll want to find an acupuncturist who keeps current on innovations in acupuncture, such as using disposable needles.

How Can You Tell If Acupuncture Treatments Are Right For You

Determining whether acupuncture treatments suit you involves carefully considering and consulting a qualified practitioner. Here are key factors to help you evaluate if acupuncture is the right choice for your needs.

Firstly, acupuncture may be a suitable option if you are seeking a holistic approach that addresses the underlying causes of your concerns rather than solely managing symptoms. Additionally, if you prefer natural and non-invasive treatments that have a low risk of side effects, acupuncture aligns well with these preferences.

It’s also essential to assess your openness to exploring fertility acupuncture, other alternative therapies, and your willingness to participate in the treatment process actively. Throughout the journey, it’s essential to communicate openly with your doctors and your acupuncturist. Remember, open communication and collaboration with your practitioner will play a vital role in achieving the best possible outcomes for your health and well-being.

Lastly, consulting with an experienced acupuncturist who can assess your specific condition and provide expert guidance is crucial in determining if acupuncture is the right fit for you.
